Using Fax Integrator to fax other documents

I'm investigating whether we can use Fax Integrator (FI) to fax documents other than the PO's being pulled down from an AIX box. The files being pulled down from the AIX box appear to be plain ASCII files. Each file has a header record that looks as follows:
Code:

HD*,P, , 8005551515 , , 1105, MSTR, 596, , 80736, 0000, DERD, 000
, VENDOR NAME , VENDOR CONTACT

Almost all of the information in the header record appears to be the information that is displayed when you choose the Faxes menu option in FI.

I'm looking for input on how people think the system works. I'm guessing it works like this:

  • They pull down the faxes in plain ASCII text.
  • They strip off the header record and add it to the SQL 2005 database. I'm not sure what table they add it to yet.
  • They then process the remaining fax text through crystal reports and produce a TIFF file.
  • They update the database with the name of the TIFF.
  • They continue to try and fax the TIFF until it makes it through.
  • They notify the source system that the fax has been sent (if that feature was turned on).

If this is how the process works, then I was thinking I might be able to get FI to fax other documents like Excel spreadsheets and MS Word documents. I'd just have to have people print to a TIFF, copy those TIFFs to the FI server, and create entries in the SQL database myself.

Has anyone done this themselves? Can you provide any insight on the process? Do you think something like this would work?

The only problem I foresee is the reverse notification system might have problems, if I'm creating entries in the database that can't be linked back to records on the AIX box.
