Title: Preferences Menu In Portal
Description: Pros & Cons of the preferences menu

jwhitesides - September 13, 2006 05:08 PM (GMT)
What are some of the pros & cons to leaving access to the preferences menu in portal? We have multiple product lines and users need to have the ability to change back and forth. The question has come down to using lawform vs. preferences. We would prefer to use the preferences option, but the security people are looking to take that option away (They don't want people accessing Logan). We are just looking for any feedback or solutions that others are using. Additionally, has anyone developed an effective way to dynamically display the current productline that is being used in Portal.

Windows/SQL Server
8.1 Apps
8.0.3 Env

Thanks for any input.

Jeff

I won't get into the "if's and but's" of the preferences menu, but you can secure LOGAN with a little work in LAUA.

As for displaying te productline:
Add this mod to default.xml (and all the other *.xml) to display the current RODUCTLINE

<HOME>home.htm</HOME>
<WELCOME>&&divWel&&, <
> to
<<PRODLINE>></WELCOME>

More tips and tricks available on my website: http://www.schronce.net/lawson

g'luck!!

If you want to prevent access to LOGAN, do what David suggests and secure it in laua. There are too many other ways that someone could get to the data and applications (lawform, Add-Ins, shortcuts, hand-crafted AGS and DME requests, etc.) even without access to preferences. Securing against some of the alternatives could be difficult, depending on how much technical expertise you have available in-house.

Of course, you probably don't want to secure against eveything in LOGAN, especially if you still want to be able to use preferences. Preference change transactions are done using RD30.

Thanks for the feedback.

One followup question about displaying the product line. By adding that code to the default.xml. Will it change what is displayed as someone changes productlines dynamically. We have been running into problems where it will display the product line they start with, but it doesn't display the new productline when it is changed. The welcome message doesn't ever change.

thanks
