Title: Lsf 9.0 Migration (environment Only)
Description: LSF 9.0 Environment
Mil0n023 - July 18, 2007 01:45 PM (GMT)
v8.03 - Using: LER(Crystal 10), AP, HR, GL, PR, BN, TR, IF, MA, TA
We are migrated our Environment (currently 8.0.3) to 9.0 - I am not sure what is involved, and we are hosted by Velocity. I am curious about any horror stories - or any "generic" what changes information? I am in the infantile stages of my project plan and want to be sure that I do NOT consider the magnitude of LSF 9.0 Environement Upgrade (At this point it seems straight forward, but we all know how that goes!)
Any info is great.
Also, FYI: Not upgrading to new security or APPs at this point.

I should say I want to be sure and consider the magnitude of this upgrade...

LSF 9 is a BIG change from 8.03. I don't know how many upgrades you may have done, but this is the largest environment change you will have seen - as a matter of fact, it's NOT an upgrade - it's a MIGRATION, which means if it goes in the toilet you still have 803 running happily beside it. That's a great contingency plan.
You're looking at:
WebSphere (I recommend 6.1)
Java 1.5
Bouncy Castle encryption
LDAP (either Tivoli or ADAM)
(and all that before you ever get to LSF 9)
New user administration (even if you're staying on LAUA)
and no doubt more that I can't pull off the top of my head right now. It's a major learning curve.
I 'ASSUME' Velocity is doing it for you since they are your host?
Get some training. I think the is a CBT on moving to LSF 9 - watch it...
g'luck!

So, would you recommend the jump to 8.1apps along with this -
Just thinking of this being a big change, and 9.0 Apps we are scheduling for March/April of 2008....does it make sense to go 8.1 first, or just jump to 9.0 apps.

When faced with the REQUIREMENT to move forward - and offered 2 options - I ALWAYS choose to go to the newest version as it simply makes more sense to endure the pain once than twice. After all, you're going to HAVE to go to 9.0 apps at some point in time anyway...
Now, whether you do it at the same time as LSF 9 is optional, assuming you are at 8.0.3.6 or higher. It's probably a LOT easier on you and your users to make those steps independently, but certainly much faster to do them concurrently. So, it becomes a matter of how long and how much you want to "feel the pain" of the upgrade process - more for less time, or less for more time..
g'luck!
